fag-glassAlison Mosshart and Jamie Hince are an Anglo American Garage Rock Duo who document their lives on tour with the use of Polaroid,  lomography and photobooth photography. Their love for retro 60’s cameras and novel forms of photography have influenced me hugly in my own work. Being in a band 24-7 takes its toll and Jamie and Alison tend to take it out with their cameras. Living out of hotels and your bus’s their photography creates something extraordinary out of something mundane such as a hotel television or a glass of cigarettes.Their polaroid work is often minimal yet quite  unusual.

They also use 60’s and 70’s lomography to document their lifes with Diana’s and Holgas as well as the classic Olympus Pen’s. This constant use of analogue photography makes their style warm and charming.

Often with the Holga’s trademark light leeks and multiexposures they photograph each other doing mundane things, sometimes such as just sleeping or sitting.

Their love of photo-booths has come across in their photography too, as they have documented over 100 photo booth sessions, posing in extraordinary and ridiculous ways. This sense of breaking the rules of photography and reverting back to old techniques has made Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince a huge influence on my work.

Patrick Pantano

wbcforweb

There is not alot of imformation about Patrick Pantano,  as i discoverd him through the cover art of cds, namely ‘The White Stripes’. He is both a photo journalist and musician who started off drumming for the influential Detroit based band the colors. He moved around to different bands like alot of detroit musicians and stumbled apon the white stripes. He used his acomplished photo journilst skills to document the Stripes and ended up taking their distinctive album covers.

Pantano has an eye for space rarther than subject which intrigues me greatly. All his images seem to focus more on the space around the subject rartherthan the subject itself. He manipulates the photograph by placing his sitters in awkward spacing and zooming out greatly to give a sence of depth to his images. I have been influenced by this use of dead space as a technique as i havent seen it used so often as much as Pantano does.

He creates a sense of wonderment and intrige in the subject when photographing space rartherthan subject and has a whole series of abstract work of walls and dead space. This style is highly influencial to me.

His work is generally quite erotic, yet mysterious. He uses studio lights to create dramatic shadows that envelope the subject against white back drops. Aswell as full body shots he is also a master of close up macro photgraphy. Taking pictures of  smaller things as Nipples and Tounges he blows them up to gigantic propotions simulating the idea of it being a landscape.

His work has influenced my close up photography as i realised you dont have to be close to a subject to take close up photgoraphy, you can be meters away and just zoom into a breath taking moment.

Robert Longo

I was watching the film ‘American Psycho’ when i first spotted the work or Robert Longo. It was the part of the film where Christian Bale was about to murder an innocent women with a nail gun, when i spotted a huge photograph of a business man in the oddest posture. His body was twisted in such an odd shape with his tie flailing in the air, i though i had to know who took this picture. After hours of googleing ‘American Psycho Photo, American Psycho Painting etc i finally found Robert Longo. Born in Brookyn January 7th 1953, Robert Longo is a painter , photographer and sculptor. His work is heavily influenced by mass media, music and film.

He became widely known for his series of portraits of sharply dressed business men withering in contorted agony named ‘ Men in the city’. Longo’s portraits have a distinctive chiseled line that seems to give the drawings a three-dimensional quality . Inspired by film stills and New Wave music, Longo began his Men in the City series by photographing his friends, both in groups and individually on the rooftop of his apartment building. He allegedly threw objects like tennis balls and rocks at his subjects, and pulled their bodies with ropes, which caused them to jump, twist and contort their bodies into stressful and often violent poses. I think this streak of madness makes Robert Longo a definite influence on my work.

Longo would capture these movements with his camera, enlarge the images using a slide projector, and trace over them with charcoal and graphite. He would later add drama and glamour to his drawings by replacing the models’ jeans and t-shirts with work attire or cocktail dresses, or by suspending a man’s tie into mid-air. Longo hoped that these works would be shown together, but they mostly stand alone as dynamic statements of urbanity 1980s style.

Merlin Bronques

vegas-polaroid-3

The first time i discoverd Merlin was on the  amature club photography website http://www.lastenitesparty.com

It was two polaroid photographs of a naked woman put, but together to make one image. It struck me as beautiful and so i dove deeper into this. It turns out he had done a series of these mostly based in las vegas, featuring strippers, hookers and just generally willing women.  He would take them to toilets, hotels and somtimes his apartment and photograph them in two parts and piece them together. it turns out Merlin is not only a personal photographer, but a successfully nightclub photographer and musician.

girl-on-bed

Originally from Brooklin NY, he grew up in Montreal Canada, under the moniker ‘merlin’. He had relative success as a solo musician releasing various albums and getting radio play often on tv show much-music. He later formed two other bands before giving up music and finding a career in night life photography and released the book ‘ lastnightsparty: Where Were You Last Night?’ in 2006.

img_3724
His nightlife photograph is as raw as his vegas polaroid series, often depicting night clubbers, stripping of their clothes and sprawling across the floor. His photography uses avaible light similar to nan goldin who i expect he draws influence from, which is one of the reasons i love his work so much.

Larry Clark

clark3

Larry Clark is one of my favourite all time photographers. His hyper real photography depicting the sleaze and squalor of teenage youth, captures my imagination beyond belief. It destroys the dignity and self respect with think we have right before our eyes. A teenage girl barley over 20 towers above the viewer in awe of her body she grips a boys penis between her hands. The audience is invisible, clark somehow engages us in the photo without making it obvious.  It this genius that captivates me.

lc2

He grew up as a teenager in the drug squat suburbs of Tulsa. Casually shooting amphetamines with his friends he quickly started shooting them with him camera too. Its this gonzo photography which i admire so much in photographers , and larry’s no exception. His work features the parts of teenage bohemian life we all wish we had.

larryclark-preus

Shooting to fame in the 90s, he quickly became a name mentioned among cult followers , as he released his feature film KIDS. Like his photography it documented adolescence in a raw but fun light. Primarily based around skateboarders it followed a group of teens through drug dens and house party’s, but with the serious overtone of sexual disease. The climax of the film results in a girl passing aids on to a boy. This juxtaposition of dark yet erotic subjects make Larry Clark one of a kind.
